A brief history of GreenhouseWhen you
trace back the origin of greenhouse, you can find that it dated way
back to Roman period. The archives of history establish that romans
were the first one to plan and create a structure for protecting plants.
They used conventional methods of putting rock slab structures over
the heated pits to simulate the greenhouse effect. In those days, a misconception of believing heat is more important than light for plants? growth was much prevalent. Hence, most of the structures were built to generate heat without giving much scope for bright sunlight getting inside the structures. When the tax structure was rationalised and after the abolition of tax altogether on glass, the materials that went into building greenhouses underwent changes and the low cost glass made its way into greenhouses or so called glasshouses. Only after the usage of glass, the importance of light for the plant growth was realised. After the advent of usage of glass in greenhouses, the design also took a change. Builders then realized that a curved roof instead of a flat one allowed higher concentrations of the sun?s rays, and usage of iron in the place of wood also contributed to the much needed absorption of sun's heat and providing the stubborn and versatile structures. At this stage horticulturists stepped in the scene to suggest more scientific methods of building a perfect greenhouse. One horticulturist by name Joseph Paxton, introduced few changes to the greenhouse design concept. The popular Palmhouse at Kew Gardens was in fact designed and built by this horticulturist in 1842. This palmhouse measured 110 meters long, 30 meters wide and over 20 meters high. Nine years after successful completion of this palmhouse project the same horticulturist has built the Crystal Palce and it turned out to be a yet another master piece. The design
that was conceived in the middle of the 18th century has come to stay
and even today the structures look similar to the earlier structures
both in its design and the materials used. | A brief history of Greenhouse | Before you buy Checklist | Benefits of having a Greenhouse | Books on Greenhouses that might be useful | Deciding on the type of Greenhouse for you | Few benefits that you get from Greenhouse | Greenhouse Advantages | Knowing the Greenhouse Lighting System and accessories | Plastics used in Greenhouse Erection |
